Hi, I’m Anna, a Year 12 student and a former student of Alpha Tutoring. I’m currently completing my work experience, and I wanted to share my personal journey with tutoring—what it was like, how it helped me, and what I learned along the way.
My Tutoring Experience
I had tutoring for both GCSE Maths and Biology. Biology was always a subject I enjoyed, but I wanted to push my grade higher. Maths, on the other hand… I honestly hated it at first.
Everything changed when I started working with my tutor. They reassured me that one day I would actually enjoy Maths—and surprisingly, they were right.
Once the areas I struggled with were identified and properly explained, things started to click. Maths became less stressful and more rewarding, especially when solving challenging, high-mark questions. By the time exams came around, I felt confident and calm instead of anxious.
That change in mindset made a huge difference.
When Should Your Child Start GCSE Tutoring?
From my experience, the ideal time to start tutoring is in Year 10. This gives enough time to cover all topics thoroughly without rushing.
However, starting in Year 11 can still make a big difference and significantly improve grades in a shorter period.
I personally started tutoring in June of Year 10, and within a few months:
- My Maths grade improved from 3/4 to a 7
- My Biology grade improved from 6 to a 9
That progress didn’t happen by chance—it came from consistent effort and structured support.
The Effort Behind the Results
Tutoring works best when you fully commit to it.
In my case, I:
- Completed 42 Maths practice papers
- Finished a full Maths workbook
- Completed an entire Biology exam practice workbook
It wasn’t always easy, but having a tutor meant I always knew what to focus on and how to improve.
How Many Tutoring Sessions Are Needed?
This really depends on the student.
Every learner is different, and the number of sessions needed will vary based on:
- Current grade level
- Learning pace
- Confidence in the subject
- Willingness to put in effort
Some students, like me, can improve 4–5 grades within a year, but the key factor is consistency and dedication.
Does Tutoring Actually Improve Grades?
From my experience—yes, absolutely.
Tutoring doesn’t just improve grades, it also:
- Builds confidence
- Provides personalised 1-to-1 support
- Offers structured and targeted learning
Before tutoring, I didn’t really know how to revise for Maths. At school, homework often felt general and not tailored to my needs.
With tutoring, everything changed.
Each week, I received:
- Structured guidance
- Personalised homework
- Focused support on my weak areas
For the first time, I felt like the work I was doing was actually helping me. That made a huge difference in both my ability and confidence.
Final Thoughts
Tutoring isn’t just about getting better grades—it’s about changing how you feel about learning.
I went from dreading Maths to actually enjoying it. I walked into my exams feeling confident instead of nervous, and that’s something I never thought I’d say.
If you’re considering tutoring, my advice is simple:
- Start as early as you can
- Stay consistent
- Put in the effort
The results will follow.
